The island of Penang offers plenty of choice for visitors but if you have not bene here before we recommend that you stay in Georgetown itself. This previous British Straits Settlement is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been wonderfully preserved.
UNESCO George Town consists of two zones; the central zone is located at the very northeast part of the island, and what is sometimes known as the buffer zone is made up by the area immediately surrounding.
You should not get hung up about staying in the UNESCO part as if you end up staying outside this area it does not matter much as it is easy to get around.
For a truly luxury hotel experience then you should try the Eastern & Oriental Hotel which was established in 1885 by the Sarkies Brothers, a family that built luxury hotels all across Asia, including Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
If you prefer to stay on the beach then head for Batu Ferringhi beach at the northern end of the island – here there is a strip of 4 & 5-star hotels right on the beach.
