Mission Hills Golf Resort

Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6415 m / 7016 y | Type Parkland | Architect Nicklaus Design

Mission Hills Golf Club is the most scenic course in Phuket with many holes running beside the sea.  A Jack Nicklaus design which can play very long depending on the prevailing wind.  Greens are a little slow but course generally in good shape.

When staying on an island it’s great to play on a course like Mission Hills Golf Club which is located so close to the sea and Jack Nicklaus has made best use of the natural surroundings by incorporating plenty of water hazards and what seems like acres of sand.

The most interesting holes on the front 9 are the par-5 2nd which involves a tricky tee shot over a sandy waste area and then a daunting approach to an island green and the 4th which is the first of the ocean holes offering wonderful views of the islands.  This medium length par 3 can be very tricky depending on which way the wind is blowing and it’s not easy to find the putting surface.  The 5th hole is sand almost from tee to green and requires a careful tee shot to avoid the waste bunker.  The undulating fairway adds to the problem as you line up your approach.  The 7th is a long par 3 with water all along the right wide but this does not really come into play unless you choose to play from the black tees.  The 8th is a short par-4 dogleg and positioning off the tee is essential to goof scoring - if you choose the right line then you have a very simple approach to the green but if you go too far right you end up in the trees with no clear shot at the green.

The opening hole on the back nine at Mission Hills Golf Club needs a good drive to be in the best position for your approach to the well-protected green.  The 11th is a short par 3 which should not present too many problems unless the wind is blowing.  The 12th hole is for long hitters and a rather ambitious 481 yard par-4 needs a 250 yard hit from the black tees and then a long calculated approach to a well-protected green.  A bogey is a realistic expectation for most of us but at least you can admire the ocean view scenery while you’re at it.  The 13th is a very long par-5 playing towards the sea and you need to pick your way between the huge sandy areas if you are to get on in regulation to a green which is difficult to hold.  The 14th is a short par 4 but the green is tricky and any over hit shot will end up in deep trouble off the back of the green.  The next three holes offer real scoring opportunities – the 15th is th shortest par 5 on the course and reachable in two for long hitters and the 16th is a short par 3 but the green is protected by bunkers both sides and  a canal beyond.  The 17th is a short par 4 and as long as you can avoid the deep hollow along the left then your second to the green can put you in a good scoring position.  Great finishing hole with water all along the right hand side and it requires a very carefully placed tee shot to avoid the bunkers and get in the best position to attack the pin.

Maintenance of the course and especially the greens are an issue from time-to-time but we have seen a great improvement lately and we will advise you if there are any change to the situation.

The facilities on offer are superb and the hotel is in excellent condition with a first rate spa. The food is expensive but justifiably so, producing excellent Thai cuisine. The drinks are also expensive, but for a holiday visit you may be happy to pay the prices just this once.

Overall conditions on the greens in the 2nd nine needs to be improved. Caddies are professional and helpful. Wide fairways and enjoyable for both lower and high handicappers

Excellent course nearby the shore

It was a nice day. The wind was not strong. I believe it will be very difficult to play under strong wind. The services were great. Caddies were good. However many greens were under repair. There was a lot of sand and it definitely affect your putting line and speed.

A good day of golf with friends.

In general the course was in good condition for this time of year, though sanding of some of the greens took a little away. I will come back.

The course is as run down as the facilities are.

Upon arrival the first impression was of a very neglected rundown facility. Lack of a practice green and a lazy caddie that upon asking told us there was no driving range, we later found out there was. Practice green has fungus growing on it and not in any condition to use. Caddies showed a complete lack of interest and knowledge. They were on their phones while teeing off, didn’t know accurate yardage and miss read greens. 16 of the 18 greens were sanded and had clear issues with fungus, this was not mentioned during booking and we paid full price. Course maintenance is non existent, many of the flags not sitting properly as cups were damaged. Dirty changing rooms and inedible food at the restaurant. We travelled a long way to play this course and left feeling very let down. I would not recommend anyone play this course.
