Red Mountain Golf Club

Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6314 m / 6905 y | Type Parkland | Architect John Morrow

The most spectacular golf course in Phuket and worth every penny

Set in the dramatically undulating landscape of an old tin mine amidst thick jungle, picturesque lakes and the red mountainside from which it took its name, Red Mountain Golf Club is quite simply one of the most spectacular courses in the world, let alone Thailand. Thanks to some memorable holes and the stunning views on offer from its high points, this is an essential stop on any Phuket golf holiday.

The range of challenges you will face runs the whole gamut: if you can negotiate the wind, water, sand and slopes you will find greens that range from small and flat to large and contoured. The only consistency is found in the uniform quickness of the putting surface and the pristine condition of the narrow fairways.

With more than its fair share of elevation changes and rocky outcrops, there are plenty of opportunities to take risks in search of rewards, but with a liberal array of water hazards this approach can be harshly punished. You’re best advised to trust the suggestions of the excellent caddies regarding club selection, and to hit straight.

The final six holes are the best, not only some of the most spectacular in Thailand but also some of the toughest. Attempting to hit the postage stamp green of the par-3 17th when you are teeing off from some 70 metres above is great fun, and the standout 18th requires some strategic shot making to make par, despite playing much shorter than its 500-yard length would suggest. As you drive up to the well stocked clubhouse in your compulsory golf cart (you really wouldn't want to walk this course), you will have a smile on your face regardless of the state of your scorecard.

Even though the green fees, the caddie's tip and the post-round beer mean you won't get change from US$150, you’ll feel it was worth every penny as a trip to Red Mountain Golf Club is an experience that will live long in the memory.

Course was in great shape and overall conditions were ideal for playing golf. It was my first time playing Red Mountain and I was impressed by the course facilities. The golf course was beautiful and fun to play and the Caddie service was great!

Disappointed in the condition of the course!!

Reviewed by ; on
Red Mountain disappointed this time around. I've played a number of times over the past 10 years, however this was my first visit in about 5 years. I think the course is still in recovery mode from the shut downs. GUR of some sort on almost every home. Tee boxes in poor condition, and to top it off, greens had been recently cored with no notification. 1 of 4 on course kiosks were open It was a real let down. The only thing that saved my day was my awesome caddie, Sao. Still an awesome layout, great locker room and restaurant facilities, but this course is months away from returning to its former self. When you consider the price of green fees etc, I'm giving this experience 3/10.

A course to remember

Reviewed by ; on
Beautiful course, and one I will remember. It isn’t easy by any means, and there is a lot of strategy required to do well here. Some of the holes are very amazing and I will remember them for a long time. Greens had just been aerated and ran at very different speeds, possibly depending on how much Sun they get.

Great track but very dry…

Reviewed by ; on
Beautiful course, crazy to pay for range balls with the cost of the round. No water given only a few places to buy on the course and rentals were a bit steep, but close to Phuket greens were only 9.2 but rolled well and a challenging layout make this course enjoyable.
