Golf holidays in Phu Quoc Island

Geography and Travel

Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam and can be found off the south coast of Cambodia, in the Gulf of Thailand.  The main island is surrounded by 21 smaller islets and is home to just over 100,000 people.

The biggest town on the island is Duong Dong and this is on the west coast, while the largest town on the southern tip is An Thoi.  The closest coastal town on mainland Vietnam to Phu Quoc is Ha Tien and it is 40 kilometres west of the island.  Phu Quoc is triangular in shape and measures 50 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide.

Phu Quoc is very mountainous and a ridge known as the ‘99 Peaks’ runs the length of the island, with Chua Mountain being the tallest. 

You will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Vietnam on Phu Quoc.  The white sand and green forests provide a dazzling contrast.

Where to Stay

Duong Dong is the main town on Phu Quoc and thus provides the best choice of accommodation for a golf holiday on the island. 

There are many local and international hotels to choose from plus restaurants, bars, pharmacies, banks and tour companies.  If you want to remain in the heat of the action while enjoying a golf package in Phu Quoc, Duong Dong is the best option.

If you would like to stay closer to the coast when playing golf in Phu Quoc, you could book accommodation at Ong Lang Beach.  Here you will find a good selection of luxury and mid-range resorts which come with their own private beach.  It’s only 20 minutes away from Duong Dong, so you are not far from the main town on the island.

Another good option is Long Beach, which is the most popular beach on the island and you can enjoy a great sunset from the resorts.

 Weather and Best Time to Travel

Phu Quoc has a tropical climate which can be divided into three distinct seasons.  The first of these is the high season which falls between November and March.  This is great time for a Phu Quoc golf holiday as the temperature is around 30 degrees during the day, with little rainfall and the lowest humidity.

If you cannot book a Phu Quoc golf package during the high season, the shoulder season is the next best option.  The shoulder season is between April and June plus late October.  The temperature and humidity are higher but there are fewer visitors meaning a more relaxed stay.

The period between July and September is the low season due to the monsoons, which brings wet weather.  This is best avoided if you want to get the most from your golf holiday. 

Things to do Away from the Golf Course

Phu Quoc National Park makes up more than half the island, so you cannot miss it.  Hiking and birdwatching are two of the most popular activities in the park, which features evergreen forests, lakes and rivers.

Another great natural phenomenon in Phu Quoc is the Suoi Tranh Waterfall, which stands at 4 metres tall and is surrounded by walkways, caves and rock pools.  You could easily spend a say exploring the area and it is just 7 kilometres west of Duong Dong.
