Gunung Raya Golf Resort in Langkawi is built in a beautiful valley surrounded by jungle with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The fairways on the golf course are pretty forgiving but plenty of water on the back nine to wreck your card.
This is a very well-maintained course and should always be included if you intent to play golf in Langkawi. This course has been deliberately designed to appeal to golfers of all standards and if you choose a tee box appropriate to your skill level then you should find enough excitement. The fairways are wide and will have you reaching for your driver even if you are not that accurate as there is no OB on this course and few hazards.
The tee box on the opening hole offers panoramic views over the course and the jungle and mountains in the background. You drive into the valley and then it’s a slight dogleg as you play uphill towards the green. This is followed by a long par-5 with a narrow landing area and a zigzag shaped fairway up to the green. The 3rd is a medium length par-4 with a wide landing area providing you can avoid the water just in front of the tee and as you approach the green the hazard encroaches into the fairway on both sides providing a very narrow opening onto the green. The 5th is a long par-3 measuring nearly 200 metres from the back tee with a ravine all the way from tee to green which is one of the largest on the course. The 6th has a tree positioned right in the middle of the fairway which blocks what is already a very narrow landing area and very easy to get blocked by the trees for your approach. The rest of this nine are fairly straight forward although the 9th which is rated as the most difficult needs to be navigated carefully.
There is more water and other obstacles on the back nine and they sometimes let the rough grow quite long so you need to mark your ball carefully to avoid losing a ball and after heavy rain the course does not drain as well as it should.
The back nine at Gunung Raya Golf Resort starts with a signature par-5 with elevated tee boxes offering great views over the course and especially to the mountain after which the course was named – it’s a slight dogleg but the green is quite open. This is followed by a superb par-3 which plays 170 yards from the back tees with a water carry all the way to a green without too much protection so providing you can make good contact then this is a birdie opportunity. The 12th is long par-4 with a water carry off the tee and a ditch running in front of the green so you need to be brave to get up in regulation.
A nice modern clubhouse with well-equipped pro-shop, excellent changing facilities and a nice bar and restaurant overlooking the course.
We loved the natural feeling to this course – a real “back to nature” experience with great views and some excellent and interesting holes and if you play midweek you will probably have the course all to yourself.
