The Royal Colombo Golf Club in Sri Lanka, has been at the Forefront of the Sri Lankan golf scene since its inauguration in 1879, receiving the Royal Seal from King George V in 1928.
Measuring 6560-yards from the championship tees the course is not long by modern day standards.
As opening holes go, the 1st at The Royal Colombo Golf Club is tough. A group of trees protect the right edge of the narrow fairway, and the closer you can stay to these trees the better the angle to the green you will have. Too far left and you will require a swinging draw over the pond to find the green.
It doesn´t ease up, the second is another hole requiring accuracy as out of bounds left and right and a pond short protects the hole.
Hole 4 is a long par three, played through the avenue of trees to a small well protected green, a great challenge for even the best golfers.
The fifth is a stunning par 4 that requires nerves and accuracy to walk away with a par. Water right and a narrowing fairway, coupled with the willow trees that protect the entrance to the green and you have a hole where para is a superb score.
Onto the back-nine and the holes continue in the same vain. The par 3, 16th is a cracking hole that will test your club selecting skills. From the elevated tee nothing is left to the imagination, as you can see all the bunkers that protect this green.
A finishing hole that can destroy your card if you decide to attack it. The sensible play is lay up short of the fairway bunker leaving a straight forward approach to the green protected by water and marshes.
The Royal Colombo Golf Club has a very classic English parkland feel, presented in superb condition year round, with ambience to match.
Clubhouse facilities are good with everything you could need for your enjoyment before or after your round.
Recently refurbished the light and airy restaurant is the ideal place to relax after your round and enjoy some local fusion foods.
The new addition of the panoramic 19th bar is superb, offering a modern setting in which to enjoy great views across the course and practice facilities.
Speaking of the practice facilities a large putting green, a short game area and a superb driving range are open to the public.
