Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort is located in the middle of forest-covered mountains about one hour outside of Chiang Mai and has recently undergone some renovation and upgrading and the courses is now in excellent condition. Framed by the Doi Khuntan Mountains, this is a stunningly beautiful and at times difficult golf course and the natural beauty more than compensates for the extra driving time from Chiang Mai city.

Surrounded by all this beautiful scenery which includes several picturesque waterfalls and the iconic railway bridge it is easy to get distracted from the many challenges that this course will throw at you. These include blind tee shots, vicious dog-legs, an island green and numerous deep and strategically-placed bunkers. As a part of the renovations they have added numerous bunkers along the out-of-bounds line to help speed up play so now the miss-hit shot will most likely end up in one of these rather than the jungle which lines most fairways.

One of the signature holes is the 160 yard par-3 5th which features an island green with a landing zone which has been severely restricted with the addition of several bunkers bordering the green – end up in one of these and at least one shot has gone. The final hole on the front nine is a potential card-wrecker with water all along the left waiting for that mishit drive with bunkers along the right and if you can avoid these your approach is to an elevated green with still more bunkers protecting it. At least on these holes you have a clear view of the landing area because on many holes you will have to rely on your caddies to point you in the right direction.

It’s nice to see the courses in such great shape as this is a very enjoyable if tough course and the wonderful views and clear mountain air combine to make this a memorable day out.

The large clubhouse is a bit old-fashioned and could also do with some upgrading but does offer great views over the course and the food is excellent.

Good variety of holes

First impressions of course is very impressive. Played B then A. B was in fantastic condition and some great holes. First 2 or 3 holes on A fairways were poor but after that no problem. Got stuck behind a 7 ball. This was a new experience for me but apparently quite common. Saw a few more of these on the way around. I would hope they can change this but I think this is embedded into how members can play. Caddies were resourceful by skipping a couple of holes and returning to them later on. Luckily it was quiet enough to do this. Got a hole in one on the A course 5th hole island green and was presented with a certificate and goodies from the pro shop by the Assistant Managing Director which was a nice touch. Was my first ever one so something to remember it by.

Great course to play but it’s all about the money, not the golf or customer service.

The course is in great condition and the it tests all levels of play. The facilities are a bit run down. The problem is we felt ripped off at the extra costs and slow play. When we checked in we had to pay for the carts and caddies as usual. They charged us for two carts and two caddies. When we got on the course we noticed most other couples in one cart with one caddie. We were not even offered that option. Once on the course we were just a twosome behind a group of six golfers which is unheard of on a busy course. We saw several groups of six. Our caddies had to drive around to different holes so we could finish before dark. Again it is about the money, get more golfers on the course. The best example of the money issue is when we bought a couple of drinks( Gatorade) before we started playing. We paid for the drinks and asked for a couple of cups with ice. They gave us one paper cup of ice not two. To get the second one we had to pay 20 baht extra. Believe me the 20 baht is not the issue. Have never had to do this anywhere else in the world. After paying thousands of baht to get on the course they have to squeeze a couple more out of you for a paper cup with ice. It just shows where their priorities are for their customers. Again, nice course but we will never go back.

"A nice layout spoilt by poor management"

The course itself is much improved and the location and views from the clubhouse are spectacular. Everything a bit chaotic with indifferent service in the clubhouse, and the caddies were not great either. During high season can get very busy with Korean golfers making for a slow round.
