Twin Doves Golf Club in Ho Chi Minh is a  27-hole layout about one hour from downtown Saigon which has been designed to blend with the natural terrain.  The course at Twin Doves Golf Club is still maturing so not too many trees and the course relies on the many water hazards and bunkers for protection.

The three nines which are named Luna, Stella, and Sole are quite similar.  Luna has water on seven of the nine holes and starts with a challenging uphill par 4 protected by two bunkers – one of which is a deep pot bunker.  Two interesting par 3’s – the 5th requires an accurate tee shot to a narrow green protected by a large bunker and the downhill 7th has plenty of hazards waiting to catch the errant tee shot.  A very tough finish as the final hole is a par 5 which is fraught with danger all the way to the green.

The Stella course has a plenty of water and you will often have to either carry a hazards off the tee or have a creek or canal protecting the green.  After a relatively simple start the course gets longer and more difficult.  Although this nine has only one par 3 it’s a memorable hole with a daunting tee shot to a green with water on three sides.  This is followed by a par 5 with water all the way to the green and the 7th is a drivable par 4 for the long hitter. Another tough finishing hole with numerous fairway bunkers and water in front of the green.

The Sole course is possibly the easiest course with less water than the other two but don’t get complacent as plenty of dangers lurk.  The par 3, 3rd requires a tee shot over water to a green protected by a large bunker.  The 6th is another testing hole with water and bunkers in play most of the way to the green and the 7th is a 600 yards par 5 off the back tees. Yet another tough finish with a par 5 starting with a long carry over water and then a daunting approach into a protected green.

Excellent clubhouse and locker facilities with a restaurant offering a range of cuisine but specialising in Korean delicacies.

Okay, experience, but I expected a bit more from the course

We teed off at 7:58 am, and the pace of play was a problem that forced us to skip the first hole. For some reason or other, many locals and new to the game players were playing, which slowed down the pace of play. The back nine did not improve as we ran into another slow group while watching them hit across the water. We jumped again. The clubhouse and the facility were good, but the locker was confusing as the card key had to be at the right spot to open. Some fancy knob that would detect the card key, which was frustrating to use. The breakfast was overpriced for the quality of the meal, but they do include a free lunch post-round. It is not the best-tasting meal, but it is free, so I can’t complain. We ended up replaying the first two holes to make up for the skipped holes, but I really didn't care for the course anyway, so be it. The green had a lot of pitch marks, but the speed was 9.2, which was respectable. The rough is something to avoid altogether, as it was some kind of weed rather than tall grass. I don’t think I’ll be returning to the course.

"Inconsistent Greens"

Twin Doves was a big hype. Yet with a decent club house the green's were not international standards at all with inconsistent speed and dampness
