The golf course at Ponderosa Golf and Country Club was originally designed by Max Wexler and later re-modelled by Ronald Fream, in 1996. The 18-hole course measures 6,467 metres from the black tees, with a choice of an additional three tee positions, which are blue, white and red. The length of the course may seem short to some but the plethora of water and sand traps, coupled with the testing undulating greens, make Ponderosa a good test, for players of all abilities. Indeed, strategic thinking plays a big part during a round of golf at Ponderosa.
Tucked away in a lovely suburb of Johor Bahru, Ponderosa Golf and Country Club is just a 15-minute drive from Johor Bahru city centre and is straight forward to reach, via the main Tebrau Highway or via the Eastern Dispersal Link. The golf club is also close to Johor's international theme parks, which makes it a great choice, especially if when visiting the area with family.
The par-3 holes are actually quite long, with the 12th hole over 200 metres in length and many of the fairways are built around hills, which makes tee shots more difficult than they may seem at first. The wind has also been known to play a part during a round at Ponderosa, so do not be deceived by the lack of length, as this course is certainly not a walk in the park.
The 7th, 9th and 16th are the pick of the holes here. The par-3, 7th hole features a tee shot over a large pond, which stretches all the way alongside the green. There are also plenty of matured Khaya trees to the left of the green, which is small and undulating.
The par-5, 9th hole, offers a different challenge altogether, with trees, a creek, hollows, a high-lipped fairway bunker, narrow green-approach, greenside bunkers and a large undulating putting surface, making it the most difficult hole on the course.
Finally, the par-4, 16th hole, features a dogleg to the left and large pond, with waterfalls, which runs to the green. Those with a long drive, may be able to hit over the water, to make the approach to the well-contoured green, that much shorter.
Other facilities at Ponderosa Golf and Country Club, include a pro shop, driving range, tennis courts, Olympic size swimming pool and Chinese restaurant. Furthermore, with floodlights in place, it’s possible to play the course in low light.
