Palm Hills Golf Club

Holes 18 | Par 72 | Length 6302 m / 6892 y | Type Parkland | Architect Mr. Wax Wexler

One of the first international standard courses in Hua Hin, Palm Hills Golf Club remains a firm favourite and although a bit short it’s an excellent layout with fast greens which are tricky to read.  Good clubhouse with excellent bar and restaurant.

Hua Hin suffers from a water shortage and Palm Hills Golf Club seems to be affected more than most but in normal conditions the generous fairways are lush and flat but the well positioned water hazards make things a little more challenging.

Some say the course has a links feel to it but the tropical plants and trees which surround the course rather dispel that notion.  The back nine which is more undulating offers good views over the Gulf of Thailand.

Fairly gentle start with a downhill dogleg par 4 with large bunker blocking the tiger line but if you play to the left of the fairway you have a good line into the green which has bunkers either side.  The 2nd is the first of the par 5’s and is an intimidating tee shot with water both sides of the fairway and narrow approach to the greens with bunkers either side and behind the green.  The 3rd is a short par 3 which is pretty easy if you can avoid the large bunker protecting the right side of the green. The 4th is a short dogleg par 4 with a narrow landing area between the large fairway bunker and the trees on the left of the fairway.  The 5th is a short but tough par 4 with water along the left and a tricky approach with water a bunker and a ditch protecting the left side of the green.  The 8th is an interesting par 3 which plays slightly uphill across a water hazard and then it’s on to the 9th, the most difficult hole on the course with a tree blocking the left side of the fairway and a narrow green sloping quite sharply from right to left.

The back nine at Palm Hills Golf Club starts with some of the best holes on the course and includes the 11th, a long uphill par-3 and the prevailing wind can often make club selection difficult.  The 12th is a challenging dogleg par 5 with water on the right off the tee and a very narrow landing area for your 2nd.  The 14th is a testing par-4 dogleg with water down the left and across the fairway and if you try to play safe the bunkers are positioned to trap you.  Maybe an iron off the tee is advisable.  A bit of respite on the par 3 15th which is pretty straightforward and the par 5 16th is a scoring opportunity if you can keep to the left of the fairway and avoid the trees which can block your approach.

A really nice resort course which is still in excellent condition and well worth playing on any golf holiday in Hua Hin and the green fees here are a bit cheaper than some of its more illustrious neighbours.

3 hrs 20 minutes for a four ball is too rushed.

I have never had to complain about pace of play being too fast before - but this was our reaction after playing Palm Hills. The caddies were rushing us on every shot to the point that we did not have time to take in the course. We completed the course as a fourball in 3 hrs and 20 minutes. Impressive - but not enjoyable. We were playing early and there was a 3 ball behind us so I understand that the staff wanted us to move at a good pace - but this was too much and it ruined the day for us. Better to let the 3 ball play through! Management should give caddies a reasonable target to complete a round - maybe 4 hrs or 4 hrs 15 mins for a 4 ball - not 3 hrs and 20 mins! Can't comment on the condition of the course - I didn't have time to notice it!

It's not one of those fancy courses, but it deserves positive feedback

It's a dry season, and you can't expect perfectly green and plush fairways and roughs no matter where you play. Considering this, this course was in a decent condition, and pace of play, overall layout and visual appeal were all good.

Our caddies were friendly and helpful, the location was good (close to the city center), but the condition of fairways and greens was not satisfactory probably due to the dry season.

Overall a course that I can recommend to play and i will be definitely back

The Palm Hills course has positively surprised me. The clubhouse has a nice ambiance, checking was easy and the locker rooms are better than black mountain for example, The only negative thing I spotted is the hanging lamp above the entrance, which is extremely dirty and does not make the place justice. We had an early morning tee time at 8 am, yet I was surprised that the driving range wasn't open at this time. The chipping and putting area had to do it for the warmup, however, they do not represent the greens on the course. I felt that the practice area green ran much faster than the initial greens on the course and it has a lot of bumps on it. The course is well maintained and lots of fun to play. the fairways are extremely forgiving, however, there are some tricky holes along the way where you need to play smart instead of purely attacking. A small room for improvement is the reads of the caddies on the greens, nevertheless, this is complaining on a high level.
