The Heron Lake Golf Resort in Hanoi which gets its name from the nearby lake is a pretty resort golf course around 90 minutes from downtown with extensive waterways criss-crossing the course with large beach like bunkers alongside.
Designed to create a top class golfing experience in a quiet and peaceful setting which is in harmony with its natural surroundings. A wide open course with not too many mature trees and it relies on the abundance of water for protection plus of course the usual strategically-placed bunkers.
A pretty easy start with a dead straight par 4 but very narrow landing areas between two fairway bunkers on the left and a small lake on the right. Also large bunkers either side of the green. The 2nd is another par 4 and the main problem here is the approach with water to the right of the green and also over he back edged by a larger beach bunker. The 3rd is a great par with a water carry to an island green with a larger beach bunker protecting the right side but some reasonably generous run-off areas if you miss the green. The 6th is another interesting hole on the front nine. A sharp dogleg right with water all along the right side – the more ambitious you are then the easier your approach will be but the green is well protected by a larger bunker on the left. The 7th is a long par 3 with a daunting tee shot over water and huge beach bunker protecting the front left of the green. A very long and difficult par 5 to finish with a lake on the right ready to catch you second and a stream which cuts across the fairway and bunkers both side of the green.
As you start for home the 11th presents the first real challenge on this half. It’s a sharp dogleg right with water all along the left side and a group of bunkers waiting if you drift too far right off the tee. The 12th is a fairly straightforward par 3 if you get your club selection correct as there two larger bunkers either side of the green. The 14th is a difficult par 4 wither water both sides all the way from tee to green and behind the green with two large and deep bunkers virtually circling the green. The main problem with the par 4, 15th is the water which crosses the fairway about 100 yards in front of the green. The 16th is a very pretty par 3 frame by the local trees with very extensive bunkering in front of the green. Great par 5 to finish and you drive to a fairway surrounded on three side by water and then you have to traverse another water hazard for your second followed by an approach to a green with a bunker all around the left side
The course’s main standout feature are the “beach” bunkers where sand meets the water’s edge with the white sand of the bunkers contrasting with the blue water of the lake.
A modern clubhouse with good facilities and excellent restaurant.
