The Sky Lake Resort & Golf Club in Hanoi is located in Van Son Lake area and consists of two championship golf courses. The location is spectacular with wonderful scenery all around. The courses can be reached in around one hour from downtown Hanoi and is set to become one of the leading golf resorts in Vietnam. The Sky Course only opened recently but it is already receiving rave reviews from the local Hanoi Golfers. If you don’t like bunkers and our fearful of water hazards then this is not the courses for you as this layout has plenty of both so unless you are accurate pack plenty of balls.
The opening hole is a short par 4 with a huge bunker along the right stretching all the way from tee to green and still more bunkers circling the green. More of the same on the 2nd with another bunker from tee to green but also cutting into the fairway which makes for a challenging tee shot as two more bunkers guard the narrow landing area. The approach is not a cakewalk as the green is also heavily bunkered. The 3rd is a long par 3 with a long water carry off the tee and a large bunker protecting the right side of the green. There are no less than nine bunkers on the par 4, 5th including one right in the middle of the landing area and several guarding the green.
The 5th is an amazing par 4 with an island fairway and a large bunker in the middle of the landing area – then it’s an approach across the water hazard to a wide open green. A similar concept on the 6th but this time the water is on three side of the fairway but bunkers line the other side so this hole demand accuracy off tee. You have to cross the hazard again to get to the green which has bunkers either side. The 7th is a very difficult par 5 with a lake all the way along the left and four bunkers lying in wait for your second and although the longer hitters can get up in two the water encroaches on the green and with bunkers left and right you need to be brave to take this on. The 8th is a shorter par 3 but with another lake in front of the green and a huge beach bunker along the edge of the hazard there is little room for error. Still more water off the tee as you end the front nine and if you can get in position off the tee then you have a reasonable approach.
No water on the 10th but a huge waste area along the left and four fairway bunkers to negotiate on your way to the small green. The 12th is a very long par 3 with water along the left and large waste area in front of the tee boxes. Bunkers left and right of the green will catch anything slightly offline. The 13th has massive bunker all along the left and running along the left of the green and with two more on the right of the green. On the 14th they have created another island effect for the fairway by using the waste areas and there are three strategically placed fairway bunkers to add to the difficulty. The 15th is a short par 4 which is open to the long hitters but they will need to avoid the 8 bunkers guarding the green.
The 16th is a very challenging dog-leg par 5 with a bunker cutting off the tiger line and another on the other side of the fairway – a large bunker surrounds the green with three more closer in making it a very very tough approach. Just in case you hadn’t seen enough sand and water the 18th has an abundance of both with a bunker stretching along both sides and behind the green – you are definitely going to need a beer if you have survived this course!
