Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort near Kuala Lumpur is a part of the popular Genting Highland resort complex which sits on top of the hill. This is really a resort golf course in average condition and is a challenge for most high handicappers because the course is extremely tight with very narrow fairways lined by the jungle so very little room for error.
This course throws everything at you with some dramatic elevation changes, the narrowest of landing areas including the 14th which measure less than metres. The problem is that on this course anything offline will end up in the deep jungle never to be seen again. Not too much water around but 4th and 15th, which are both par 3’s have water protecting the front of the green which makes the correct club selection critical.
Even if you are not having a great round you can at least admire the views which are exceptional and the view from the 3rd tee box is stunning with the fairway framed by the jungle-clad hillsides and the hotel complex perched on top of the hill.
Plenty of decisions to make as you make your way around as some tighter and more risky lines off the tee will be rewarded by a simpler approach but this course generally rewards careful more conservative play if you want to keep out of trouble. The multi-tiered greens add to the problems but should not distract from what is unusual golf courses in wonderful surroundings.
