The Alpine Golf Club in Bangkok is one of the top golf courses in Thailand which has often hosted some top class events including the 2000 Johnnie Walker Classic which was won by Tiger Woods. Designed by the world-famous Ronald M. Garl this is a superbly designed course that will require you to be on top of your game if you are to score well. The heavily contoured fairways means there are few level lies and many of the greens slope away from you making it difficult to hold your approach.
From the very first hole you will get a taste of what lies in wait over the next few hours – undulating fairways, numerous water hazards and cleverly positioned bunkers. The third hole is also the first of the par 3’s with a lake fringed by a large beach bunker – you need to try and reach the right side of the green to score well. It naturally made our pick of best golf courses in Bangkok.
The short par 4, 4th will tempt the long hitters but if you cut too much off the dogleg then water, bunkers and trees lie in wait. Better to aim for the middle of the fairway but this still requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the bunkers around the green. The 5th demands a straight drive to keep out of the mounds on the left and the water hazard on the right – also requires a very accurate approach to avoid the bunkers protecting the green.
You can attack the flag on the par 3, 6th but the severely contoured green makes this a challenging hole and it’s usually playing very fast. The 7th offers a slim opportunity of a birdie if you can drive it long and straight but the green which is constructed on an island is not an easy target so probably better to play up and hope you can get up and down. On the 9th tee you are faced with what looks like a desert of sand all the way to the green which is surrounded by more sand and heavy contouring which tends to throw balls off the green into the surrounding swale.
The 11th looks pretty easy off the tee with a wide landing area which for most players will leave a short iron into the green but the difficulty of this shot is dramatically increased by the presence of water on three sides!
The pick of the holes on the back nine is the 12th – a par 3 signature hole with a huge bunker and heavily contoured green where any pin placement is tough. You need to avoid the fairway bunkers on the 13th and the sloping fairway tends to throw a slightly offline tee shot towards the water – fast green so keep below the pin if you can. Great view from the elevated tee box on the par 5, 14th but this hole demands accuracy off the tee if you are to successfully negotiate the narrow landing area. The 15th is a long par 3 and it’s tough to find the well-protected green.
Excellent finishing hole with plenty of danger around the green to spoil your round.
Club house and other facilities at Alpine Golf Club are some of the best of any of the golf courses in Bangkok and include a large banquet hall, comfortable restaurant, swimming pool, fitness and aerobic activities.
