Thana City Golf Club offers a great opportunity to play the only Greg Norman designed golf course in Thailand which in its heyday hosted several prestigious events and was recently totally refurbished. One of the closest golf courses to the centre of Bangkok and this is an ideal course to play on your first or last day in Bangkok. It made our list of best golf courses in Bangkok.
Mature trees lines both sides of most fairways at Thana City Golf Club so you need to avoid them if you want to score well and water also borders several of the holes so the course rewards accuracy off the tee. The greens are all well protected by bunkers and many of them have very high lips so this can be very tricky if you end up near the front.
On the front nine the second is a medium-length par 4 with bunkers either side of the landing area and large bunkers protecting the front right of the green. The third is the first of the par threes which is made more complicated by the stream which runs diagonally across the fairway and in front of the green. The sixth is another medium-length par 4 which requires a substantial drive to carry the stream which traverses the fairway so it’s better to play up short and it’s still only a medium iron to the green. The seventh is a long par 5 and the eighth a simple par 3 but the last hole in the front nine is a potential card wrecker with water all along the left hand side and a stream cutting across the fairway about 100 yards from the green
Greg seems to like islands greens as the 13th, 14th and 16th all have water surrounding the greens which will test your nerve as your settle over your approach. Same goes for the 18th and many a round have been wrecked by this finishing hole which requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the water and fairway bunkers followed by a daunting approach to yet another island green.
Because Thana City Golf Club is so close to the centre of Bangkok it can become crowded at weekends and your backswing may be disturbed as the course is underneath the flight path of the nearby Suvanabhumi airport.
During the renovations the clubhouse was totally upgraded and is now very modern and Thana City Golf Club is part of a much larger sporting complex so other facilities include a swimming pool, a driving range, short-game practice facilities and even a golf academy. Very well-stocked and reasonably priced pro-shop and excellent restaurant serving a mixture of Chinese, Japanese as well as local Thai food.
